Its probably better to use the Ubuntu APT tools to update the APT configuration. Instead of echo, use apt-add-repository to manipulate the apt sources:

sudo apt-add-repository 'deb https://apt.dockerproject.org/repo ubuntu-xenial main'
In part #2, after running sudo systemctl status mongodb, the result is like below,

● mongodb.service
Loaded: not-found (Reason: No such file or directory)
   Active: inactive (dead)
So instead I ran sudo systemctl status mongod, and I got this,

● mongod.service - High-performance, schema-free document-oriented database
Loaded: loaded (/lib/systemd/system/mongod.service; enabled; vendor preset: enabled)
Active: active (running) since Sat 2017-03-04 10:28:55 UTC; 1min 4s ago

# I tried uninstalling mongodb according to their official docs and reinstalling, still getting the same output. Any help would be great!

I have a brand new droplet and there appears to be something wrong with the “stable” release using these instructions. When I run sudo systemctl status docker I get a bunch of error and it throws me into Vi:
